The NITK Chemical Engineering Department offers the B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) course to students from not only all around the country, but also abroad. Started in the Year 1965 No. of Seats : 46 (IITJEE) + 9 (DASA)

Program Outcomes (POs)


On successful completion of B.Tech in Chemical Engineering programme, the graduates will have

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering and Chemical engineering to the solution of complex engineering problems
  2. an    ability to design and conduct experiments, and to analyze and interpret data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions
  3. an ability to design a process to meet desired performance specifications with appropriate consideration for public health,   safety, cultural, societal and environmental considerations
  4. an ability to function effectively as an individual and as member in a team.
  5. an ability to create, select and apply  appropriate techniques, resources, modern engineering methods and tools, including prediction and modelling to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems with understanding of limitations.
  6. an ability to  understand contemporary issues and  apply reasoning informed by   the contextual knowledge to  assess societal, health, safety, legal, and cultural issues and recognize their  professional and ethical responsibilities relevant to professional engineering  practice
  7.  an ability to communicate proficiently in written and oral form on complex  engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.

Programme Educational Objectives

1.      Advance professionally in the practice of biotechnology, biochemical engineering or allied fields.

2.      Advance professionally in their chosen career path, wherein they apply the communicative, logical, analytical, computational or problem solving skills developed during their graduate study to their professional practice fulfilling the ethical and social responsibilities.

1.      an in-depth knowledge in the design and development of a bioprocess, technology and protocols to meet desired performance specifications with the ability to evaluate, analyse and integrate new technology / development to the existing bioprocess, technology and protocols.

2.      an ability to think critically and analyse complex issues related to bioprocess development, bioreactor design, bioremediation etc. and use the available knowledge effectively to carry out independent research in development of new processes/ designs / techniques/ operational strategies or improvement of the existing ones.

3.      an ability to think rationally to solve engineering problems, evaluate wide range of available potential solutions and arrive at feasible, optimal solutions after considering public health and safety, cultural and societal needs.

4.      an ability to identify research problems and extract information pertinent to these problems through detailed literature review; carry out research independently; apply appropriate research methodologies and modern techniques and tools; design, plan and conduct experiments; analyse and interpret data; draw meaningful conclusion.

5.      an ability to create, select, learn and apply appropriate tools and techniques for designing, modelling and analysis of bioprocesses and other complex engineering activities with proper understanding of limitations.

6.      necessary intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to work in a team in a multidisciplinary environment with a capacity for self-management and teamwork so as to contribute positively to collaborative scientific research which culminates in the realization of common goals of the team.

Program Outcomes

I.       An in­depth knowledge in concepts of engineering in pollution prevention, control and management, and strategies to combat the global issues on public health, safety, energy and environment.

II.       An ability to analyze complex problems related to design and operation of pollution control equipments/plants: synthesize available information so as to carry out independent research in development of new design/processes/operational strategies or improvement of the existing ones.

III.       An ability to provide innovative solutions or to evaluate a wide range of potential solutions for problems on design and operation of equipments/processes related to pollution control and arrive at feasible, optimal societal and environmental factors.

IV.       An ability to identify research problems and extract information pertinent to these problems through detailed literature review ; carry out research either independently or in team in multidisciplinary environment ; apply appropriate research methodologies and modern techniques and tools ; design and fabricate experimental rig; design, plan and conduct experiments ; develop and simulate mathematical models ; analyze and interpret data ; draw meaningful conclusion.

V.       An ability to create, select, learn and apply appropriate tools and techniques, resources and modern engineering and computational tools in design, operation and modeling of pollution prediction, prevention and control equipments/processes and to other related complex engineering activities with proper understanding of limitations.
